Lolay (Winter Solstice) of the Lunar Calendar

Lolay is a Festival, Usually performed on the Eve of the (Winter Solstice) of the Lunar Calendar to celebrate the New Year and the Annual Harvest, This year’s Lolay fell on January 2nd 2015.In the olden days groups of young children would be seen going from house to house singing blessings for grace and bounty. In return they would be gifted with food, snacks and ration for a picnic. This tradition had died a natural death with modernization and it was through the initiatives of the Folk Heritage Museum, that groups of youth have started taking an interest once again. The group calls on the Their Majesties the King and Queen and other members of the Royal household to offer their prayers and blessings.

Live demonstrations are organized from time to time at the Museum and includes a variety of events like Ara making, Hand grinding of rice (mill stone), Pounding of rice, Weaving (Threatha and pangtha),burning incense, Live cooking in the kitchen, Mustard oil making process, and showcasing the Live demonstration of traditional games( khuru).
